Sound familiar?
The growing pains show up in the same places.
Companies that grew fast around a founder tend to run into the same problems. Emergent is for the leaders who are living inside them.
Everything still routes through one or two people.
Decisions, questions and escalations pile up at the top because nobody below has been taught how to take them.
New managers learned the job by surviving it.
They were promoted for doing the work well. Nobody showed them how to delegate, give feedback or run a team.
The same fires keep coming back.
Each one gets put out, and the cause underneath never gets fixed, so the team stays in startup mode long after the company has outgrown it.
How Emergent works
A coach, a skill, and proof it stuck.
Each leader works on one skill at a time, starting with whatever is pressing at work this week.
One-on-one coaching
Regular sessions begin with what is happening right now, then work on the skill underneath it. Everything discussed stays confidential.
Practice between sessions
A short assignment, usually 20 to 30 minutes, tied to something real on the job. Practice is assigned when it fits the moment, not on a fixed calendar.
Evidence, not opinion
Progress is tracked on a four-stage ladder. A skill moves up only when the leader's own behavior shows it.
- Awareness
- Practicing
- Consistent
- Mastery
A report the sponsor can read
A one-page summary shows where each leader stands and what they are working on. It reports stage and goal, not what was said in a session.
What gets measured
Behavior, not what someone can recite.
Most leadership programs measure what people learned. Emergent measures what they do differently. If a leader never practices a skill at work, it does not count as progress.
Built on research
Every part rests on something that has been studied.
The curriculum draws on established work in motivation, trust, mindset and skill building.
- Motivation: self-determination theory
- Trust and team safety: Amy Edmondson's research on psychological safety
- Mindset: Carol Dweck's research on growth mindset
- Skill building: deliberate practice and the stages of skill acquisition
Who builds it
Created by Dan Beard.
Dan started in software development, moved into operations management, and now coaches leaders. He wrote the curriculum, designed how progress is measured, and built the portal where coaches and leaders do the work.
The Digital Custodian
Emergent is a program of The Digital Custodian, Dan's company, which also helps founder-led businesses with operations, AI and automation.
